A refurbished 1862 Civil War cannon (technically a 3" ordinance rifle) is a proud asset of our community. This cannon is an original weapon from the Civil War era, which stood idle in one of our parks until we were approached by a committed group of living history buffs, who inspired the project.
The gun routinely appears in re-enactments and historical presentations, both around this area and at some of the national battlefields. A twilight firing of the gun is shown at left. Double click the photo for an enlarged view.

Carey is also the home of the Basilica & National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation, operated and staffed by members of the Conventual Franciscan Order. The original Shrine Church, built in 1867, was replaced by the larger Minor Basilica around 1875, but continues to be maintained and used to this day.
The site has grown to include a Friary, the Pilgrim House (used for guest lodging / retreat housing), a Retreat Center, a Gift Shop, a Cafeteria and a 30 acre meditative park.

Ohio Energy Project (OEP) continues to develop new ways to promote energy education and "Kids Teaching Kids" leadership opportunities. This year a focus will be Energy Efficiency. OEP received a grant from Ohio EPA/OEEF to provide 2,500 students with a Home Energy Efficiency Kit. The students will learn in the classroom how to be energy efficient in their homes. Those students will then implement the different efficiency measures in their home while they are educating their family members.
This past summer 69 teachers participated in the Energy Sources Tours visiting many of Ohio's energy sites that demonstrate the different sources, their applications and other science concepts.
