Public Works Laborer

The Village of Carey is currently accepting applications for a full-time position of Laborer in the Public Works department. This position is one of a physically demanding nature under varying weather conditions. The candidate will be a member of a crew, under immediate supervision, until gaining experience and being assigned to independent tasks as directed by the Department Supervisor. This position requires dealing with the public in a positive manner. Applicants must have or be able to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire. The position is subject to random drug testing. EEO.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:  An example of acceptable qualifications:
Completion of secondary education or equivalent, or any combination of training, education, or experience 
which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. 
Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

Must possess a valid Ohio CDL B with air brakes; must qualify for and maintain insurability under the 
Village’s vehicle insurance policy.

10% (1) Under immediate supervision, maintains service and main water lines; maintains well fields.
10% (2) Inspects and maintains sewer lines; inspect, clean, and repair catch basins.
30% (3) Cleans and maintains parks (e.g., mows, paints, replaces structures; etc.); leads and instructs work of recycling and seasonal positions as assigned.
20% (4) Landscapes, seeds, grades, and hangs appropriate signage throughout the Village.
20% (5) Maintains roadways and right of ways throughout the Village (e.g., patch, plow, paints, etc.).

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE CHARACTERISTICS:  (*indicates developed after employment)
Knowledge of:  Road construction, maintenance, and repair; utility construction, maintenance, and repair; 
water distribution systems construction, maintenance, and repair; water distribution systems and
components; sewer construction, maintenance, and repair; grounds maintenance and repair; methods, 
materials, and techniques used in municipal public works construction projects; lead work.
Skill in:  Controlling operations of equipment or systems; motor vehicle operation; use or operation of 
equipment used in public works construction projects.
Ability to:  Carry out simple instructions; recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate 
action; adapt to changes in the work environment, manage competing demands, and deal with frequent 
change, delays, or unexpected events; meet productivity standards and complete work in a timely manner;
